Mei Tai - Soft Structured Carrier - Stretchy Wrap - Woven Wrap - Ring Sling - Pouch
A Pouch is a tube of fabric that is folded in half and worn like a sash. The baby fits into the pocket made by the fold. A pouch must be correctly sized in order to work properly. Pouches are available padded or unpadded, and several brands of adjustable pouches have been produced.
Warning! The cradle carry is difficult to do safely in a pouch. Be very careful that your baby is not curled into a C position with her chin to her chest as this position can constrict the airway. See our handout on proper newborn positioning for further information. Please do NOT use a pouch sling with a newborn unless you have reviewed this handout.
Pros: Best for infants and toddlers for hip and front carries. Great for quick trips, folds compactly for storage.
Cons: Proper positioning is difficult to achieve with newborns in pouches. Pouches cannot generally be shared by different caregivers because sizing needs to be precise. Many people find one shouldered carries to be hard on the body, particularly with heavier babies or for long periods of time.
